If you love classic banana bread recipes, this cream cheese-filled banana bread takes it one step further. The loaf is soft, moist, and packed with banana flavor, with a rich layer of sweetened cream cheese baked right through the center. The cream cheese adds a cheesecake-like texture that pairs beautifully with ripe bananas and makes this bread feel a little more special than the traditional version.

Serve it for breakfast, brunch, or an afternoon coffee break. It also freezes beautifully.

This cream cheese banana bread has been on The Bossy Kitchen for years and remains one of my favorite ways to use overripe bananas. Readers continue to come back to it because the combination of banana bread and creamy cheesecake-like filling simply works.

You can find some other recipes on my blog, like this Cranberry Orange Banana Bread, Cocoa Walnuts Banana Bread, or this delicious Easy Banana Bread With Sour Cream.

What Makes This Recipe Special?

This recipe stands out because it combines two favorite desserts in one loaf. The banana bread stays tender thanks to sour cream and ripe bananas, while the cream cheese layer adds richness and a subtle tangy flavor.

Unlike many cream cheese banana bread recipes that use a swirl, this version creates a distinct layer in the center, making every slice look beautiful when cut.

Ingredients You Will Need

For the Banana Bread Batter

  • Overripe bananas - The darker the bananas, the sweeter and more flavorful the bread.
  • Sour cream - Adds moisture and helps create a tender crumb.
  • Granulated sugar - Sweetens the bread without overpowering the banana flavor.
  • Eggs - Provide structure and richness.
  • All-purpose flour - Creates a soft, classic banana bread texture.
  • Baking soda - Helps the loaf rise properly.
  • Vanilla extract - Enhances the overall flavor.
  • Salt - Balances the sweetness.

For the Cream Cheese Layer

  • Cream cheese - Use full-fat block cream cheese for the best texture.
  • Sugar - Sweetens the filling.
  • Egg - Helps the cream cheese set while baking.
  • Flour - Stabilizes the filling and prevents it from becoming too loose.

Ingredient Variations

While this recipe is excellent as written, you can add a few extras if you like:

  • Chopped walnuts or pecans
  • Chocolate chips
  • A pinch of cinnamon
  • Dried cranberries

I recommend keeping additions to about ½ cup, so the loaf stays balanced.

How To Make Cream Cheese Banana Bread

Step 1: Prepare the Cream Cheese Filling. Beat the cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Add the egg and flour and mix until fully combined. Set aside.

Step 2: Make the Banana Bread Batter. In a separate bowl, combine the banana bread ingredients according to the recipe card instructions. Mix just until combined. Overmixing can create a dense loaf.

Step 3: Assemble the Loaf. Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan. Spread half of the banana batter into the pan. Carefully spoon the cream cheese mixture over the batter and spread it evenly. Top with the remaining banana batter.

Step 4: Bake. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out mostly clean. Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack. Cool completely before slicing.

Tips For Success

  • Use very ripe bananas for the best flavor.
  • Bring the cream cheese to room temperature before mixing.
  • Measure flour correctly by spooning it into the measuring cup and leveling it off.
  • Let the loaf cool completely before slicing so the cream cheese layer can fully set.
  • If the top begins browning too quickly, loosely tent it with foil during the last 15 minutes of baking.
  • When baking in a glass pan, reduce the oven temperature by 25°F.

Make a double batch and freeze one loaf for later use. I do this sometimes so I can share it with my daughter when she comes to visit. Also, the banana bread made this way can stay at room temperature for no more than 3-4 days.

Storage Instructions

Store the bread tightly covered at room temperature for up to 2 days. For longer storage, refrigerate it for up to 5 days. To freeze, wrap the completely cooled loaf tightly in plastic wrap and place it in a freezer-safe bag. Freeze for up to 3 months.

Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.

  • Greek yogurt
  • A simple brunch spread

FAQs

Can I slice this bread as soon as it comes out of the oven?

When the banana bread is out of the oven, let it cool completely before you slice it. The cream cheese needs time to set.

Can I make this bread with whole wheat flour?

Yes, you can. However, the bread will come out darker in color and more compact. I would add a ¼ teaspoon of baking powder to help the batter rise a little bit more.

Do I need to refrigerate this Banana Cream Cheese Bread?

No, you do not need to refrigerate the bread, as the cream cheese inside is already cooked. Please keep it in a cool, dry place. It should be good for up to 4 days. If you live in a humid environment, then I would refrigerate it.

Can I freeze this bread?

Yes, this bread freezes really well. As soon as it has cooled completely, put it in the freezer. It will be good for up to three months.

Can I make this bread into muffins?

Yes, you can do that, too. This would be really fun. I would bake them at the same temperature but remove them after 15-17 minutes.

Can I use frozen bananas?

Yes. Thaw them completely and drain any excess liquid before mashing.
